In
2009 I reviewed my picture library with the sole intention of pulling together
a series of images that captured the identity of the United Kingdom and its
inhabitants. It was a warming and a personal experience shared with my wife Kim, my children, Samantha, Reece, Heather and Marcus, and my wider family and friends. I now have a large framed collage that adorns a wall in our home here in
Mission British Columbia, as a reminder. I often glance at a picture and smile as I recall the when, where and why of that time. I was most fortunate in the six years Kim and I shared together in the UK to need to travel to far flung places. Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands all received visits.
As an exercise
part self entertainment and part posterity I am breaking out and then expanding
detail for the 160 images in the collage and a further 80 images that would not fit in the frame.
These images captured my imagination and I feel combined they are the United Kingdom through my eyes. They give a flavour of things British and Northern Irish.
Some were shot to the agenda, most were not, simply a snap in a place at a time that now fits the bill. Who knows you might learn something as I ramble and gambol forth and I might as well. I have supplemented the core images with others from my library where I think it adds to the story.
This project may take a while but I will certainly enjoy the journey and anyone else that chooses to walk alongside is more than welcome. As many of the miles as you like!
